A NEW AKIDEMY LOCATION OPENS
IN WEST HILLHURST.

When Akidemy signed the lease on a new space in West Hillhurst, we knew that we needed to pay homage to the flagship West Springs location while also creating a fresh and fun new space.

At the entrance, we needed a way to corral kids within a boot/coat area without closing off the space or blocking the light from the south-facing windows. To accomplish this we incorporated open slats above the cubbies that allows a sightline through to the space, showing off the patterned wallpaper and maple slat wall surrounding the washroom. This washroom was given the classic peaked doorway and fun wall colour, making it a feature of the space rather than something to hide away.

The existing back room was removed to incorporate a reading area, complete with fun patterned carpet, wicker pendants, and a custom corner nook for private reading.

As always, storage space was a must — everything from books to sticks to art supplies and bowls needed a spot. We incorporated built-in millwork all the way around the space, with a mix of full- and partial-height, open shelves, and vented doors to allow artwork to dry.
